Festive Season Floor Maintenance

There is something about having a real Christmas tree that cannot be replicated by an artificial one. The look of the tree and that fresh smell of pine really help set the Christmas mood. A real tree also does something else an artificial one does not... it can create a mess. If you have an engineered timber floor, use the tips below to ensure your tree does not damage your floor.

1 – Clean

When choosing the spot for your tree, make sure it is clean and free from debris. You do not want to place your tree on a dusty or dirty floor as scratches could occur as you move and adjust it in its place. Sweep or vacuum the area before installing your tree and follow up with a quick mop.

2 – Protecting

Protect your floor. When using a real Christmas tree, watering is essential throughout the season. Make sure you have a spill or overflow tray under the pot as you do not want water running onto your floor. Secondly, use a sheet or decorative tree skirt below the tree to catch pine needles and sap that may fall out.

3 – Maintain

Before you bring your tree indoors, make sure you shake it well to ensure any loose pine needles, sap, and other debris are left outside. Pine needles and sap could scratch or damage your floors. Use an old sheet under the tree as you bring it inside as this will catch any leftover debris. Once the tree is in its place, make sure you clean up any fallen needles, sap, and debris before putting a sheet or tree skirt in place.

4 – Enjoy

Once your tree is in its place, decorated, and lit up, it is time to admire and enjoy it! It is a clever idea to quickly sweep or vacuum around your tree regularly to ensure pine needles and sap are removed. Also, quickly wipe up and dry any spills that occurred while watering your tree.

5 – Wrap Up

When it is time to remove your tree, we suggest wrapping it up with a sheet or tarp to ensure the mess is kept off the floor. This can include water dripping from the trunk, pine needles, sap, and other debris. Once the tree and its pot are removed, wipe up any spilled water, vacuum the area and then follow up with a mop.

Christmas is a time for family, friends, and fun. Unfortunately, it can also be a time for mess. Do not let the festive season be the reason for floor damage. Once the presents are unwrapped, the tree is down and family and friends have departed, a good cleaning of your engineered timber floors will ensure they last long beyond any festive season.

When cleaning your engineered timber floors, we suggest using non-abrasive brooms or vacuum heads and a spray mop with a removable and machine-washable microfiber pad. We have some terrific tips on cleaning engineered timber floors in our previous blog post – here.
