How To Clean Engineered Timber Floorboards

Engineered timber flooring looks amazing when it is newly laid, and it can continue to look that way when cared for and cleaned regularly. We will look at some of the best ways to keep your new engineered timber floor looking fresh and new for as long as possible.

Preventative Care

Start by ensuring that your heavy and often used furniture has felt pads to prevent scratching. Felt pads are a great way to ensure your furniture, like tables and chairs, is less likely to scratch and indent the surface of your floorboards. Using felt pads on your sofas and other heavy furniture will also ensure your floor is protected.

Door mats are also another terrific way to help protect your floors. Not only do they help prevent additional dirt from being tracked inside, but they can also help reduce the need to constantly clean. Door mats can also help with the durability of your flooring because dirt buildup over time can cause micro-scratches to the floorboard surface. Doors mats are a small investment, but they can go a long way in protecting your floors. Mats will be particularly beneficial in entryways, hallways, kitchens, and other high-traffic areas.

Methods of Cleaning

We always recommend regular sweeping or vacuuming of the floor to remove dirt, grime, and other debris that could cause damage and micro-scratches to the floorboard surface, which can dull the appearance over time. Regularly vacuuming with a vacuum head that can have its bristles down will easily remove dirt and debris. Quickly using a microfiber floor sweeper between regular vacuuming is also helpful in removing dirt and debris that could cause damage. The microfiber pads can also be removed and washed to ensure they keep working as intended.

Engineered timber floors can be mopped. However, it is recommended that a sopping wet mop never be used. Using water directly on engineered timber floorboards can cause water damage, swelling, and lifting of the surface at joins. If you wish to use a mop, it should only be mildly damp, never wet, and non-abrasive. Never leave a damp mop sitting on the floorboards as this can also cause damage and swelling.

When making the decision to mop your floors, we recommend investing in a microfiber spray mop and associated cleaning products that are designed for engineered timber floors. Spray mops are excellent for cleaning as they will not leave water on the floor. Also, when used with the correct cleaning solution and a clean microfiber pad, your floors will come up clean and protected. Just like the pads on a microfiber floor sweeper, the pads on a mop can also be removed for cleaning.
